Live Brief - 'Meeting places' part 1

In a recent 'creative design’ class, my lecturer spoke about an upcoming opportunity to work on a collaborative project with the law department here at the University. The department were seeking to find some individuals who would help them create some postcards/informative leaflets for a local food bank. The postcards would be placed in the food parcels, providing individuals with help, support and legal information. They wanted some graphic designers to lay out this information in a visual format, using illustration as a means of breaking up the text.

As soon as I heard about this project, I was really keen to put my name forwards. I’ve never worked on a collaborative project of this sort, therefore I wanted to take this opportunity whilst it was there. It sounded like a fun challenge, something which I could put all my efforts into. I knew this project would help to strengthen my skills and allow me to work outside of my comfort zone. This year is my chance to experiment and take all the opportunities which are available to me. As it’s my final year, I want to work on as many live briefs and projects that I can. In one of my previous posts, I spoke about my ambitions of working as a freelance illustrator. I believed this project would provide a perfect insight into the freelance world. I’m hoping this experience allows me to build upon my confidence and communication skills, giving me a flavour of what a freelance role is really like.

Today, I had my first meeting with the law department. We spoke about our initial ideas and how we could expand the brief into a further concept. It was really great to speak to these individuals, as our ideas seemed to bounce off one another. Whilst the law department are sorting all of the legal information for us designers, for the time being we have been asked to create some initial sketches/ illustrations for the postcards. For this project, I’m also working alongside another designer, my classmate; Ashlee, as it will be great to see how our styles mesh together.

I’m so excited to start on this project, and can’t wait to see what we create! I’ll be documenting the process of my development work and designs, so stay tuned for further updates!
