Scott Duffey is a graphic designer and illustrator, who again was a previous student at the University of Chester. I was particularly looking forward to hearing from Scott. I was hoping that he’d provide some insight into his role as an illustrator and discuss some of the opportunities which are available within it.

Scott spoke greatly about his work interests. He built up his initial reputation working as a graphic designer. Over the years, he’s experimented with computer coding, advertising, branding and animation, where he eventually discovered his niche in illustration. Similar to Denise, Scott has worked in numerous jobs. He stated that many of these roles were unrelated to his degree and career aspirations. Although he didn’t particularly enjoy working in some of these positions, he now looks back upon these experiences and values them. Scott discussed that everyone has their own individual goals and aspirations. It’s okay to take a longer or alternative route to get there. The experience we gain throughout the journey is what matters the most. I found this discussion very inspiring. The thought in leaving university and not being able to find a design job straightaway is slightly daunting. However, Scott’s art journey reassured me that anything is possible once you put your mind to it.

Scott’s discussion also centred upon the importance of promoting your work through social media and other promotional platforms. He states that as creative individuals we need to get into a habit of sharing and publishing our work online. This allows potential employers and clients to see what your design practice is about. In relation to my work, I have begun sharing and promoting my work through a website and social media. So far, I have gained a positive response from this, as it's something which I’m going to continue developing in the year.

Scott briefly shared some of his methods for selling and promoting his designs. To sell his work he uses market stalls, online gift shops and fairs. Him and his wife currently own an online design business called ‘Toucan Tango’, selling gig posters, framed gifts and cards. Alongside my interests in children’s illustration, I’ve always had the dream of setting up my own online business of this sort. As it’s really inspiring to hear a student like myself, create a name and reputation for themselves. I’d love to be able to make some of my designs available to purchase, as I’m eager to figure out how to do so.

Overall, I found Scott’s talk very motivational. It’s amazing to hear how a previous student has achieved so much since graduating. The main message I have taken away from his discussion is to constantly push yourself, challenge your abilities and create the things which make you happy.
